Special thanks to Amy for the tip. See, that’s the beauty of travel. You never know what you end with up, and everyone you meet is simply just a new adventure!
How We Met Amy
So, Samantha and I were staying at Hendra’s place, when Amy was also staying there. We introduced each other and said that we were going to hike Mt Bromo that midnight, which was a coincidence because Amy just came back from the volcano. As we were talking about how to get there, Amy said that there was a way to get to the crater for free!
Directions to Free Entrance
You have to use the motortaxi (ojek) to get to this place. Tell the driver that you want to use the free entrance. The free entrance is by locals only and it is used for the horses.
Take the route all the way down. It takes 20-35min, depending on your fitness level. Be careful of the horses and the dung along the way.
At the foot of the entrance, you will meet a guy. He is very tall with green eyes. His name is Syed. He is a guard of the park, but he can help you for your free entrance. Just tell him that you know Lisa from Singapore. She recommended this way. Behave like you are comfortable with this arrangement and that I have told you (which is true. I am telling you now).
He will bring you to either Bromo Crater or Mt Batok, depending on what you want. At the end of the trip, kindly give him IDR 50,000 as the tip. He will follow you along the way and even tell you interesting stories. The original entrance fee is IDR 250,000 – 300,000!
Syed Is Your Man
He is a very interesting person. Multilingual, Syed speaks many languages fluently including French, English, Chinese, etc. He can also read and write Sanskrit and old languages.
His background is even more fascinating than his language abilities. From Myanmar, he ran away during the war. There, he began his travels through Southeast Asia. From connecting with a cow to his childhood, you will have fund speaking to Syed. Go with an open mind and have a great chat with him!
Name of Place: Mt Bromo
Look For: Syed. Say you know Lisa from Singapore.
Cost (Tips): IDR 50,000/person
Send my regards to Syed, when you meet him!
