Zermatt is located in district of Visp, in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is also a very gorgeous little town that does not have any cars there. The mode of transport in Zermatt is by horse carriages, walking, little taxis or via the railway, Gornergrat Bahn.
Ps: I recommend visiting during Christmas time. You get a beautiful view of the little towns, lit up with Christmas light and beautiful white snow. It’s the Switzerland you always imagined. This is also where those viral Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook Switzerland pictures are taken.
Getting To Zermatt
Zermatt is one of the attractions in Switzerland. It is in the Swiss Alps region with many gorgeous mountains. This is why the Glacier Express, the panoramic train, starts in Zermatt. The Glacier Express would not be the fastest, but it will be extremely gorgeous.
Another way: At Visp, take the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (the train) to Zermatt. It departs hourly. You will past through Randa and Täsch before arriving in Zermatt. The train will climb mountains and pass through them, making it a scenic ride.
Last way: Helicopter, because you can.
One of the reasons to go to Zermatt is to view Matterhorn, the mountain on Toblerone chocolate. Well, you cannot actually hike Matterhorn unless you are an expert mountaineer with really good equipment. Nonetheless, you can go to Gornergrat to view it or to Klein Matterhorn for the glacier paradise. Matterhorn is really far away, although it looks really near! It also means that it’s extremely huge and you can see it from many places.
Upon arrival in Zermatt Bahnhof (station), you will see an office opposite the station. That is where you can purchase your tickets to get up to Gornergrat. You can purchase a return trip if you’re there for sightseeing and a one-way trip if you’re going up for skiing or snowboarding. You can also hike down in summer or winter, if you’re badass enough.
From Zermatt, take the train up all the way to Gornergrat, the last station. You will pass by the following stations: Findelbach, Riddelalp, Riffelberg, Rotenboden and finally Gornergrat. The return trip to the last station allows you to stop at any stop once.
