New York City is a fantastic place to be in. A city that never sleeps, you probably should get a hotel to sleep, nonetheless.
We tried out a total of 3 hotels in New York City, and this is my absolute favourite: The Renwick Hotel New York City, Curio Collection by Hilton. I will also be sharing about the other 2 hotels: Westin New York Times Square and Mondrian Park Avenue.
About The Renwick Hotel New York City
Hilton Honors Program x The Renwick Hotel NYC
Being part of the Hilton Honors program, The Renwick Hotel enables you to earn points when you book your stay. Since Elliott is a gold member of the Hilton Honors (HH), we enjoyed free breakfast during our stay too. You could either collect HH points or get a free continental breakfast per person. The free breakfast coupon gives you 3 breakfast choices or a $10 voucher for meals.
Why The Renwick Hotel
If you are a fan of history, this is the place for you. The Renwick is a member of Historic Hotels of America, celebrating the finest historic hotels across America. The hotel used to be artists’ studios like F. Scott Fitzgerald!
If you are a fan of the landmarks of New York City, this is also the place for you. You get to Grand Central Station in 4 minutes. The New York Public Library is just a short walk, and Times Square is a subway station away.
If you are a fan of staying in bed with your loved one, in a comfortable luxurious loft, this is the place for you. We spent so many lazy mornings in bed, cuddled up as it snows outside. We also stayed in the room with a balcony (Level 15) and had our own private space.
Experience in The Renwick Hotel NYC
NYE in The Renwick Hotel
We stayed in The Renwick Hotel for 5 days, that spans across New Year’s Eve. We had the view of the Empire State Building from our room and a balcony facing the city. While it was all freezing cold outside, we were nice and warm in our bed, cuddled up to each other. As the ball drops, you could hear people screaming from Times Square because we are that close! And after a while, you get the party confetti flying in to our balcony.
Such a small detail, but I love their toilet, shower and toiletries. The toilet is spacious so Elliott and I could be inside at the same time for our morning wash up. The shower is not a rain shower, but the water is hot and powerful, perfect for snowy days outside. They also provide rooms with bathtubs, for you people who love baths. And lastly, the toiletries is a partnership with Apotheke and I absolutely adore their soap.
The room is like a lovely loft with a bed in the middle, cupboard beside the TV, nightstand and a table to work. The balcony added a lovely touch to the entire living space. It feels luxurious, yet at the same time, it feels like home.
Although the service is not the best, it was great. The cleaning staff were friendly and nice. The front desk was helpful all the time. If I were to stay at a place for its service, this is not the hotel to be. Mondrian on Park Avenue has way better service.
We had free breakfast due to the gold membership status. It was either a $10 cash voucher for the food or to choose 3 items from a list. The list was very limited: waffles, yogurt, oats or pastries. The waffles had to be one of the worst I had. It lacks the fluffiness, the texture and the consistency. Pieces were falling apart as you pick the waffle up. Needless to say, we only ordered it once. The yogurt was plain with granola. I found the granola too sweet as it was coated with a million layer of sugar, so I opted for just plain yogurt going forward. The pastries are: croissant, pain au chocolat and blueberry muffin. In short, pick the pain au chocolat.
I really love the loction of the hotel. It is just 4-minute walk away from Grand Central, and very central to many landmarks. We could see the Empire State Building from our bed. Lots of restaurants nearby and the subway was also just around the corner. Since it was freezing cold in winter, a hotel that is near everything was important.
Value of The Renwick Hotel NYC
We spent about USD$1,460 for 5 days in the hotel. Mind you, it was New Year period, so everything was a lot more expensive. We also booked last minute because Airbnb in New York City is simply unreliable and horrible. (If possible, avoid booking Airbnb in New York City. The hosts are extremely unreliable and they keep cancelling. We had more than 6 cancellations, before giving up on Airbnb.)
Was it expensive? I would say yes. But was it worth it? I would say yes. We had free breakfast thrown in and had the view of the city during New Year’s Eve. Instead of standing in the freezing cold waiting for the ball to drop, or squeeze with the crowd in a small club or partying on the boat with strangers, we had a nice warm place to ourselves for New Year’s Eve. To be in the arms of your loved one when the entire city goes bonkers below, is such a priceless memory.
