I love taking the different airlines and compare them across board. It seems like South China Airlines has very bad reviews, so it is time to check them out. I remember the other time when I had to take a domestic flight in China. It was Xiamen Airlines, and it is arguably the worst flight in my life.
South China Airlines
South China Airlines is one of the largest domestic airlines in China. For my flight, I took an economy class from Shenzhen to Guilin in February 2014. It is ranked #6 on the Worst Airlines in the World by Zagat.com. (Photo credit: airwaysnews.com)
South China Airlines is part of SkyTeam global alliance, and you can collect points across several regional airlines like China Southern, Vietnam Airlines, Korean Air, China Airlines and many more.
Seats on South China Airlines
The flight is a B737, which means that it is 2 rows of 3 seats. It an early morning flight, but we were so exhausted from the day before, so window seats do not matter. If you are interested in window seat, take seats with A or F at the end.
The seat however, was super small! I felt extremely uncomfortable for a 166cm (5″4′), while Valentin was 183cm (6″). There is very limited leg space even for an Asian, you would not be keen to take this flight is you are bigger-than-usual-Asian size. With regards to the seats, 12A, 12F, 13A and 13F are the best seats with more leg room and window.
Thankfully it was a short flight.
Food and Entertainment
Surprise, surprise. The tray table is equally small and there is no television for you. In fact, there is absolutely no in flight entertainment at all.
I had no impressions on the cabin crew because they neither had extremely high service levels nor do they look exceptional. I had a bad throat and needed some water. However, they refused to give even a glass of water. My coughing got worse and we had to purchase a bottle of water instead. Comparing to the domestic /regional airlines I frequent, the service standards are way off.
Overall Review of South China Airlines
South China Airlines is not something I’d recommend, but comparing to Xiamen Airlines, I would suggest this. On Xiamen Airlines, the local passengers were smoking their cigarettes on the plane when the announcements and signs literally show that it was illegal. There is more order and regulations in South China Airlines. Nonetheless, theses are also short flights, and it is wise to choose the less of 2 evils.
