Pantai Cenang is the touristic place. This means you have all the attractions at your feet and you don’t really have to travel too far to get to where you want. What is there to do there? Tons! If you are the type of traveller who likes to be in one area, Pantai Cenang is the place for you. You have dining, shopping, entertainment, nature and everything there.
So where exactly is this area? It is on the east cost of Langkawi Island. In fact, it is very close to the airport, about a 10min drive away. Perhaps this is why the area is being developed for tourists due to its proximity.
What to do there
My my, there are so many things to do there. Let’s begin.
Pantai Cenang Beach
Pantai Cenang actually means Cenang Beach. At this beach, you can do all sorts of beach activities. It is perhaps the most popular beach on the island with restaurants and bars lining it. (Pretty much like White Sand Beach in Boracay, Philippines). Do check out the Night Market opposite Bon Ton Resort on Thursday nights as the street turns into a night of shopping and food.
Laman Padi Rice Garden
This rice field is really amazing. I remember when I was in Bali, visiting the rice terraces. But they just harvested so it wasn’t nice. This rice field was lush and green with crops swaying lightly in the wind. It is a padi field (not terracing) at the northern end of the area (close to the airport). There is also a museum on cultivating rice and its free!
Want to see animals swimming underwater? Head down to the Underwater World in Langkawi! You will see to see the large indoor aquarium of animals. It opens from 9.30am to 6.30pm (weekdays) or 8.30pm (weekends). It costs RM38 for adults and RM28 for children. It is an informational and family-friendly activity.
Eat and Drink
The area is known for their nightlife as well. It is perhaps the only nightlife area in Langkawi. My local friend told me that the following places are great for parties: One Love Reggae Bar, The Woods and Sunba Retro Bar. The entire street also has lots of different bars and restaurants with very cheap happy hour prices!
Of course, most important for many South East Asians: Shopping. The 2 big malls are Zon Duty-Free Shopping Complex and Cenang Mall. You can buy alcoholic drinks (really cheap!), local food and lots of snacks there. Cenang Mall is also the only place to buy stamps in Pantai Cenang area!
If you are sick of this place and want to get out, there are tours everywhere. Tours for island hopping, tours to take you to the Bat Cave in the East, tours to snorkel and you can also try out the jetski island hopping tour! They might sell at a higher price than Kuah Jetty, but they do provide transfer to and fro hotels.
Most people stay in Pantai Cenang area for convenience. It is a short cab drive from the airport (RM20) and many activities are held there. However, if you are interested to get there from where you stay, you can call a cab, motorbike cab or drive. It is about 30min drive form Kuah Town center. There are many cabs and motorbike cabs in Pantai Cenang, so don’t worry too much about leaving that area.
This area is great for people who want to reduce travelling time. Stay in this area and have everything near you. It is also a touristic area, meaning most people speak English and knows the usual tourist behavior. It is also very convenient from the airport.
