Johor Bahru is the city closest to Singapore. It takes just S$2 to get to Johor Bahru from Singapore. This is my itinerary when I need a break from Singapore and spend a day eating, shopping and relaxing in the city of Johor Bahru. This is my “treat yo self” itinerary.
Ps: it’s better to have a car, but ordering Grab is easy in Malaysia.
This is the routine that I do, maybe once a month.
- Best days for chill-out session in Johor Bahru: Tuesday or Thursday, no public holidays
- Best time to enter: 10-11am
- Best time to exit: After 9pm (after your dinner)
Late Morning Massage: 2h Full body Massage
Since I usually enter in the late morning, it’s too early for lunch and too late for breakfast. So, it’s massage time! I prefer Thai massage, as there are quite a lot of Thai working in Johor Bahru. So you get a really good Thai massage.
Lunch: Dim Sum
- Name: YamCha Hong Kong Dum Sum
- Address: 4, Jalan Seri Orkid 31, Taman Seri Orkid, 81300 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
While many people visit Malaysia for Malay food, Johor Bahru has quite a good number of local Chinese cuisines! My dad found this Hong Kong dimsum place. I recommend the siew mai, pork bun, shrimp chee chong fun. But honestly, their chili paste is my absolute favourite.
Ps: if you spend above 30RM, they give you a card where you can get 10% off your next visit.
Treat Yo Self + Tea: Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru
After a full meal, burn the calories off by shopping. This Paradigm Mall is HUGE, like really huge. There are lots of things to do in the mall, like shopping, ice-skating, lots of nice snacks, etc.
My guilty pleasure is not shopping, but grocery shopping. (My exes always hated grocery shopping with me because I can stay there forever.) The best supermarket there is Village Grocer. They’re a premium supermarket with lots of imported goods of high quality. You can be sure to get anything there. I usually buy vegetables (it’s so fresh) and some other imported products. I can stay in that supermarket forever.
As for tea, I recommend Portuguese egg tarts and coffee at the 4th level.
If you are in the “treat yo self” mood, there are hair and nail spas at the 4th level too. Since I don’t enjoy shopping and grocery shopping only takes a while, I usually treat myself to a nice hair spa day.
- Name: Paradigm Mall
- Address: Jalan Bertingkat Skudai, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
Dinner: Alam Seafood Restaurant
Finally, as it looks like the sun is setting, it’s dinner time. This place is difficult to access (hence you need a car), but the seafood is one of the freshest in the area. They have their own catchment area in the sea, and everything is fresh from the water.
I recommend their fish, crab, prawns, vegetables and more importantly, their homemade drinks!
- Name: Alam Seafood Restaurant
- Address: Sungai Danga, Kampung Sungai Temon, 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia
After a hearty meal, we usually get the car washed before heading home. A simple treat-yo-self itinerary and a day of relaxing. Life’s just so simple.
