After nights in the big names of hotels, we decided to stay in a more luxury chic hotel. The Mondrian Park Avenue is great in general. The service was exceptional and they have an amazing rooftop bar. I have to admit though, if given the choice again, we would probably stay at a different hotel.
It is a very new hotel in New York City, it just opened 3 months ago. Hence, there is a learning curve in many aspects. Nonetheless, the stay was good and I missed it when we left. Mondrian Park Avenue was one of the 3 hotels we stayed at in New York City. We also stayed in The Renwick Hotel New York City, Curio Collection by Hilton and Westin New York Times Square.

Why Mondrian Park Avenue
Out of the 5 hotel options we had on hand, we chose Mondrian Park Avenue in the end. We choice Mondrian because there is a Mondrian in London and Elliott loves the rooftop bar. So, since we are in New York City, this hotel would probably spoil us with yet another amazing rooftop bar like in London.
Unfortunately, after arriving in the hotel, we realized something. The front desk staff told us that Mondrian New York is not like Mondrian London because it is a franchise hotel. The lobby was significantly smaller and less grand. Nonetheless, the staff were extremely hospitable and service was great. We had a little chat with the front desk and were on our way to the room.
Art Meets Accommodation
Actually, I personally love the idea of art being incorporated in our daily lives. Piet Mondrian is a world-renown artist that is famous for his art – blue, white, red and yellow blocks with black lines. So to stay in a place inspired by this artist was definitely exciting.
Experience in Mondrian Park Avenue
The entire room was decorated from an artist mind. That means the objects are placed with an aesthetic and artistic value rather than a businessman of optimizing space or economist of maximizing value/efficiency. The room had reflective metals everywhere, cold concrete tiles and interesting cupboards. While it was artistic and beautiful, the metal only made the room colder, the tiles were too cold when entering the toilet and the cupboards are better for aesthetic purpose than functionality. In general, the room was built for art than for practicality.
The bed was great, but the pillows were too fancy for it being functional. They were too hard and high to sleep well. The blanket/duvet was also rather thin. At Westin, they gave 2 duvets to keep you warm in winter.
The toilet was gorgeous, but not functional. Reflective metals everywhere made it great as additional mirrors. The rain shower and shower head were powerful and luxurious for showers during winter. The towels provided were thick and warm. The soap, shampoo, conditioners and body cream were of a high quality. They even gave us one loofah!
However, everything in the toilet was extremely cold. The reflective mirrors were very cold. The white tiles on the toilet floor were freezing. Getting into the shower was challenging since the rain shower only warmed a small area of floor tiles. The rest of the tiles were still freezing. The housekeeping team also took the loofah away after our second day.
In general, the toilet could be better designed for functionality and aesthetic purpose than just aesthetic purpose.
The service was the reason why we actually booked our last few nights in Mondrian Park Avenue. The reviews shared about how great and interpersonal the service is. As we were there, the service was even better than we imagined! The front desk was friendly and personal, the doorman was helpful and the service staff in the rooftop bar was so kind. The housekeeping team also greets you good morning. In short, the service was better than I imagined.
We were so lucky with our entire stay in New York. We did not book the room with breakfast, however we received breakfast for free! Due to the snowstorm, the restaurant at level 1 was not working. The weather caused their pipes to freeze. To compensate that, they gave every hotel guest free breakfast at the rooftop bar.
The breakfast was basic: coffee, decaf coffee, 6 types of tea, orange juice, cereal, croissant and Danish pastry. It was not any continental breakfast sets, but hey, it’s free! You could tell that the hotel is very new because the service staff during breakfast are quite clueless about what to do. For instance, making sure that coffee is always available, cleaning the tables promptly, ensuring that food is hot and not stale and cold. But everyone is nice and friendly, so that’s great. I am sure this is just a learning curve now.
Subway is a minute walk away. Grand Central station is a station away (or you could walk). You could also walk to Madison Square Garden and visit the dog park while you are there. It is also right on Park Avenue, so very centrally located. Food options are along Park Avenue and 5th Avenue is just 2 streets behind.
Since we were there during winter and the coldest night in USA, you would imagine that heating is to the utmost importance. There were moments where it was -17℃. So as you can imagine, it was cold. Yet, the room was never warm and cozy. There was an empty space between the headboard of the bed and the wall that had a flow of cold air. Changing the temperature in the room did not help significantly either.
Since it was cold, I always deal with it with a hot cup of tea. Guess what, there was not tea, coffee or kettle in the room! Turns out, you had to call the front desk for a cup of hot water and tea or coffee. They will prepare it and send it to your room. It was probably good customer service, but I like my tea prepared in some specific way. On one night, there was not room service, so they finally brought the kettle and 2 tea bags so I could make my own tea. That was great.
Value of Mondrian Park Avenue
In general, Mondrian Park Avenue is very new. The staff are still new to everything, especially the breakfast staff. But that being said, the staff are very friendly and professional.
Would I stay there again? I would if it was summer. The room was too cold for our liking and it was designed more for aesthetic purpose than functionality. For instance, we had a work desk with a sofa. Hence, we worked there. However, there were no plugs available near the table. The available space in the fridge and cupboard are filled with hotel food instead of empty space for you to keep your things. They also provided a payable Evian water instead of bottles that we could drink. That being said, I am very in love with their service staff and would definitely come back again when it is warmer.
