What’s soul food, you ask? Soul food is food good for your soul. Imagine coming home after a long day of sitting down in the office, crunching numbers, sipping that cheap coffee and the air conditioning keeps blowing in your face. And after that long day, all you want to do is to lay down on your soft bed, sheets in 1000 thread-counts, the smell of freshly baked cookies, listening to good ole Jazz and a kiss from your loved one. That is what Sylvia’s Restaurant is, on a plate. That food makes you alive. This is the best restaurant to eat if you’re in Manhattan for the first time. Hence, it’s #1 on the 10 Must Eat in Manhattan.
Sylvia’s Restaurant for New Years Day
We went there on New Year’s day to get a some good soul food to start the year. The place is in Haarlem, North Manhattan. It was snowing a few days back and the howling wind now cuts your face with each gust. Thankfully, the playful sun is out. The warm sunrays hit my skin and warm my cheeks, bringing colour to it. We got off at 125 Street Station, with our heads tuck down to our neck, we braved the wind and walked to Sylvia’s.
Why Sylvia’s Restaurant is the Best
Inside, the restaurant was warm. Heat emitting from the heating and radiating off the smiles of the staff’s face. In fact, with all the chatting going on, I thought we were at a friend’s grandmother’s home and we are there for a thanksgiving dinner!
Around the restaurant, you find newspaper clippings and pictures with all the famous people, including numerous great presidents (my pal, Obama) and superstars. You know that a place is good not because it is highly rated on Tripadvisor or Lonely Planet, but because you have many regulars. We even met this Japanese regular that visits them often! The lovely waitress and he had a little nod and “hello Tom” before he went back to chatting with his friend.
Best Chicken and Waffles
They have many great food options, but the most popular one is chicken and waffles. It was so good that we went back again during our stay in New York. The waffles are thick and fluffy and the chicken is crispy. The chicken is the best fried chicken we ever had. Something else that’s great there is the corn bread that they give before your meal arrives. We love it so much!
