“Choo choo” goes the train in the mountain village in Switzerland. Bruno showed us his creation of the Famous Swiss Rhaetian Railway. Bruno is the host of the house I stayed in, and he was such a kind and wonderful Swiss-Italian man.
Who is Bruno
Bruno is half Italian, and raised in Ticino. He moved to Avers, at the borders of Switzerland and Italy where he recreated a model railway system of Switzerland all around his house! His Gartenbahn (Garden station) is a popular attraction to tourists and locals in the area. The track goes around the house and the garden, starting from the garage.
Bruno is a very passionate man, who found his passion in railway. What you don’t know about him is that he is born deaf! He is a very motivated man and thus developed a hobby in building railway tracks. He made everything by himself, from the tracks to the trains itself! Since 2014, he has created over 180 metres of tracks! This includes tunnels, viaducks and bridges.
Gaternbahn (Garden Railway)
The design of the Rhaetian railway and 20 carriages are under construction. Due to the heavy snow in that region, Bruno is only able to build the tracks in summer and autumn, where it is less covered with snow. In winter, he would focus on building model railway carriages instead.
As a child, Bruno loves playing with model railway, a passion started by his late father. He enjoys focusing on building and creating railway tracks and carriages since. As a designer, engineer, stationmaster and supervisor, Bruno even has a schedule for his trains to set off!
Communicating with Bruno
He enjoys meeting new people and sharing his passion with visitors. He understands sign language, Italian and German spoken at a loud voice. Wait, but I DO NOT speak any of them! Fortunately, he has a partner who helps to translate everything. I also used tons of hand gestures and body language to communicate with him. Turns out language barrier only exist if you think there is one! We had a fun morning playing with the railway system despite the heavy snow the past few days.
Are you interested to visit him? Stay tuned to the next post on my homestay with Bruno and how to get there!
