“Let’s go camping!”
The best type of people is those who are always up for spontaneous adventures. It was only on Friday where we decided to camp on the weekends. Fortunately, we found a camping site, and it has to be one of the best camping places in Luxembourg!
Camping in Luxembourg is in my bucket list. Luxembourg is known as the financial investment hub, but they are also blessed with lots of mountains and nature. So naturally, hiking and camping is in the bucket list for Luxembourg.
Camping in Luxembourg
This camping site we found, is called Camping Kohnenhof. It is situated at the borders of Luxembourg and Germany. How close to the borders? If you cross the river, you are in Germany. And the river is right in front of the cabin that we booked!
The camping site was surrounded with nature. The tall mountains and trees decorated the background, with the icy cold river flowing by. The weather was beyond perfect, and there is nothing better than to sit under the sun and admire the nature with a cold beer in your hands. And that was exactly what I did.
We were lucky to have a cabin by the river, which also means that Germany is just opposite the front porch. We booked a cabin for 4 people, so it was 2 rooms with a queen-sized bed and 2 single beds.
There was also a kitchen, 2 toilets, dining area, sofa and front porch. We parked our car beside the cabin and immediately changed to summer wear.
After chilling under the sun, we went for a little hike to Germany for some delicious apple pies. We came back just before the sun sets, and started our little barbecue. Although the campsite does not have any barbecue facilities, we bought 2 mini-barbecue sets to cook with. We made our barbecue by the river as the sun set behind the mountains.
The owners, Casper and Christien, are Dutch. Most of the customers are also Dutch. Maybe I am biased towards the place because meeting Dutch people is akin to being at home in Europe .
Great For Families and Friends
The place is great for families, especially during summer where they have activities for kids. There are also playgrounds available for kids, although I had some fun playing on the swings.
I went there with 3 new friends, and it was equally great. We went hiking, barbecuing and chilling under the sun. It was also possible to swim in the river, swim in the indoor swimming pool or to kayak down/play in the river.
It is also great for couples. They have cabins for 2, 4 or 6 people. Most couples there are old retired people, enjoying their retirement. They usually stay in the area for 1 week to enjoy and relax.
Other than cabins, you can also pitch a tent or park your camping car (RV) there. They have electricity, water and other facilities available. I saw a group of motorcyclist enthusiasts that were camping there with tents.
The best way to get there is with a car. It is possible to take a bus, but it can take you forever. It is in the North of Luxembourg, so it is possible to go to the campsite from Netherlands, Belgium and Germany as well.
I really love this camping site. It is so clean, spacious and really luxurious. I was expecting a muddy and dirty camping experience, but this was the total opposite. They had all the kitchen needs that you can find in your home, and even provided us with toiletries. The people were also super friendly there. In fact, the owner’s son is studying the same thing as me, and we even have a class together. We ended up driving back to Netherlands together and had such a fun time. How can anything be that coincidental? Life continues to amaze me.
Hiking to Germany
Although everyone was feeling super lazy, I wanted to hike and dragged everyone along. We went for a hike to get some apple pies. The entire journey there was beyond amazing. The nature, different shades of green, flower blossoms and blue skies. I was living out of a postcard!
At the apple pie place, they only spoke German. We thought it was close to the borders, so we aren’t surprised. After looking at the price list, we all looked at each other, exclaiming, “hey I think we are in Germany you know?” and burst out laughing. Germany is a lot cheaper than Luxembourg.
We went back before the sunset to start our barbecue and campfire. We bought lots of food before going to the campsite and was pumped up for some hot grilled meat.
The sun set behind the river and mountains, as we barbecued for almost 5 hours. The twinkling stars joined us at midnight, and it was beyond amazing.
I woke up to the sound of the flowing water in the river and warm sunshine on my face. The entire day was spent tanning, and I think I got 50 shades darker. We also made some amazing breakfast, with the stove and facilities provided.
