One thing I learnt this summer is definition. Funny how nothing has to be defined, yet humans give definitions to everything. Gender, social class and time, just to name a few.
For the past 3 months, I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded with different people to engage in deep conversations (I actually do that often, just that it’s more in recent months). One lesson learnt was that who is to define things that particular way? An example would be success.

Definition of Success
What’s success? I used to define it with a decent salary, good job, comfortable house, nice family, a car and maybe a dog. At least that’s how success was defined to me since young, thanks to the social construct of society. Travelling, meeting different professionals and engaging in interesting conversations slowly opened my mind to question everything. How in the world is that deemed as success? That’s a damn-ass boring life*! (Except that cute puppy)
People began to define success in their own definitions. Followed by dreams, aspirations, their views of education and more. It makes you think. So often, people get into arguments and conflicts because they have different definitions of things. Neither is at fault, nor is any right. It is simply due to the unawareness of the existence of the different definitions of things. I realised that when you open your mind to the different possibilities of an issue and not limit yourself to the definitions society or you set, you’ll be amazed at what’s going on in other people’s mind.
Keeping an Open Mind
It is important to be aware of your world’s view, for it is not the territory to another person’s mind. When speaking to someone, especially if a different race, culture or background, always listen and allow the world to flow in, unfiltered. Sometimes it might be different, because I’ll tell you, change is not easy. But soon, you’ll realise the new perspective to things, gain more insights and enrich your existing knowledge. The world becomes a whole new level of amazing!

*people have different definitions to life and living. Some come here to survive, some to pass time, some to make changes, some to enjoy every moment. Depending on what are your definitions of life are, you’ll enjoy different things. I’m here to enjoy every moment, and a safe office job with a decent monthly paycheck is very nice. But I prefer “exciting, crazy and passionate” to “very nice”. I’d hike a volcano anytime, instead of being in a 4-walled room. That said, define your life the way you want. Neither of these are the right answers because the right answer doesn’t exist.
