Be it going to Bruges, Brussels, Antwerp or even the French side of Belgium like Arlon (near Luxembourg) and Kortrijk (near France), you can get to ANYWHERE in Belgium for just €7,90 from the Netherlands.
There are 2 ways to get to Bruges: by train or by bus. The main train station is also the bus station. People usually get to Bruges from Brussels, Ghent or neighboring countries like the Netherlands or Germany.
Things you need
You will need just 3 things:
- Proof that you are younger than 26 years old: usually a student card is enough and highly recommended
- A credit/debit card: the Dutch ING Bank is recommended. Otherwise anything is fine
- Belgian Rail app (free): For Apple,For Android, For Windows.
Buying Tickets at Train Station
There are 2 ways of purchasing. If you are in the Netherlands, you can go to the train station and purchase your tickets via the machine. Remember to use the machine with a B on it. It is the Belgian rail machine and not the usual Dutch train ticket machine (NS). It’s a mix of white and orange.
Buying Tickets Online
Log on to the Belgian Rail. From there, order your tickets. For example, I used Maastricht to Bruges. The important thing is to select “Tickets Maastricht” and”GO PASS 1 From Maastricht”. You can also buy a ticket to Maastricht at the flat rate.
Step 1: Choose your Ticket
Step 2: Check Your Shopping Cart
Note: I booked a one-way journey and not a return. A return ticket is just twice the price.
Step 3: Choose PDF as the delivery method.
Type in your email to receive it. This is where the app comes in handy. When they send you the PDF, there is also a confirmation code. Put the confirmation code into the app and you will get a QR code. It makes the verification on the train a lot faster. Also, I don’t get asked for student card ID when I use the app.
Step 4: Payment
There are a few payment options. Sometimes there are additional charges, so check with your card. I have an ING bank card so I can make payments without any charges via iDeal.
Now wait for your email of the tickets! This is really convenient because I book my tickets while walking to the train station. It saves time and also reduce your carbon footprint 😉
Go Pass 1 Maastricht Terms
There are 2 conditions to using this pass. It is a flat fee of €7,90 but you have to be
- Younger than 26 years old
- Travelling to/from Maastricht
If you don’t live in Maastricht and want to use this, get a ticket to Maastricht and purchase a new ticket via the Belgian Rail. It is a lot cheaper that way. Do share this little hack with your friends!
