Carry-on vs check-in, that huge debate. Why is it that many people do not check their bags in?
In the past, I used to maximise my checked allowance. Checking-in your baggage is convenient for boarding the plane and provides a pretty good “insurance” against being left behind at the airport. Now, I carry my bag onboard as much as I can.
I’ll break it down in 5 reasons for you.
The mindset of these 2 behaviours is vastly different: carry-on vs check-in. The first situation of using your checked allowance is usually common for tourists and travellers, visiting the country for a short time. You pack as much as possible and have a blast at your travel destination.
The next scenario is frequent travellers or frequent fliers. These are people who travel often and pack light. Packing light is very important when it comes to flying often, as you do not want to spend time waiting for the baggage to arrive at the carousel. That brings me to the next point: Time.
Talking about time, it could be true that you just have to wait for a few minutes (about 10 minutes) at the carousel. However, time is money, especially since most frequent travellers are business travellers who are there for work.
You want to spend the least amount of time as possible in the airport and get out as quickly as possible. Checked bags also require you to be at the airport earlier to check your bags in, instead of people with mobile boarding passes, entering the departure hall immediately.

There is a trend in the aviation industry that has moved from bundled tickets (checked baggage + ticket) to unbundled tickets with add-on options (ticket and checked baggage sold separately). This has caused many travellers to think twice about the additional costs associated with checking a bag in and time savings during a journey.
Keeping Your Belongings
Another aspect is about losing your bags. I lost my bags twice from Vietnam to Singapore and New York to London. The items mixed up were only returned to me after a period of time. I needed an item for a work event, so that was a hassle.
And as for the safety of bags, my checked bag was almost destroyed on a United flight from NYC to Chicago. It is common knowledge that the crew of the aircraft throw your bags around. So get a good luggage for when you check them in.
From my friends in the aviation industry, they told me that your bags are literally thrown around. It is not uncommon to have my baggage returned with dents or minor damages.
If You Still Use Check-in Bags,
There are 2 types of luggage for check-in: those that get destroyed in cargo bins, and those that destroy other bags in cargo bins. Get the latter. Buy an aluminium-frame Luggage, Works Stealth bag or a Travel Pro. All crew members use them for a reason!
