When you are in Edinburgh, you cannot miss out the fresh ingredients that Scotland has to offer. One of my recommendations is to visit Galvin Brasserie de Luxe, in the famous Waldorf Astoria 5-star hotel. It is one of the best fine dining restaurants in the city, with a cosy setting and Michelin-star quality food.
I recommend coming here for a quiet dinner with your significant other for a date night with quality fresh food paired with a good conversation!
Food in Galvin Brasserie de Luxe
As mentioned, Scotland prides herself on having plenty of fresh produce. Hence, I usually find restaurants that offer local fresh Scottish produce.
The ingredients are mainly fresh from Scotland. They also have a seasonal menu, featuring the produce of the period. This is important because they use the freshest ingredients of the season.
The seasonal menu is for a limited time only. Galvin Brasserie de Luxe prides themselves on locally sourced fresh ingredients and that is emphasised by its seasonal menu. The menu comes in two courses or three courses option with pre-selected food that complements your platelet.
However, I would recommend you to get a two-course menu of main course and dessert because their starters are absolutely fantastic.
The starters took me by surprise at how delicious it was. I could just eat all the starters and be satisfied!
For starters, the traditional haggis and French onion soup are the most popular. The table beside us ordered the French onion soup and you could smell the different layers of ingredients just by sitting beside them. Haggis is a traditional Scottish dish that you have to try! For Crustacea, the lobster is the best seller. The other favourite is the Lindisfarne Oysters. It was fatty, juicy, sweet and absolutely fresh. It blew my mind.
For starters, try:
- Traditional haggis
- French onion soup
- Whole lobster
- Lindisfarne Oysters (favourite!)
For the main meal, try the Spey Valley venison loin, one of the popular dishes. Or if you are having the seasonal menu, get the truffle macaroni & celeriac if you love truffle. Otherwise, the other option in the seasonal menu is great. If possible, make sure to add the side dishes to complete your meal! The broccoli is crunchy, fresh and delicious.
Desserts cover a great selection for all sweet-tooth. We had cheese and crackers and it was fantastic! The cheese was rich, creamy and not too strong, perfect for those who do not like the smell of cheese. They pair perfectly with the crackers and wine we were drinking.

The beauty of Waldorf Astoria is its history. It used to be an old train station that is remodelled to become a fine dining restaurant and hotel. Galvin Brasserie de Luxe is set in an old-school traditional classic setting of cute chairs and booths. The music is also soft and soothing, making it a great place for a conversation.
The Brasserie is open by the Galvin brothers, two of Britain’s most influential chefs. They are both Michelin-starred chefs and opened their first restaurants in London. Hence, you can imagine the 5-star quality of food and wine provided by Galvin Brasserie de Luxe.
