Like Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa is the German Airlines and is based in Frankfurt, Germany. Lufthansa is ranked 12th place in the Best Airlines in The World in 2015. After taking all the 3 best airlines this summer, I figured it is time to give the other airlines a chance. Since I am not a huge fan of stopovers, I gave Etihad and Emirates a miss first. Let’s see if my ass could tolerate another 13-hours flight with Lufthansa again.
About the airlines
Top Deck vs Bottom Deck Seats
I was on a flight from Singapore to Frankfurt, then to Brussels in Belgium. It is a 13-hours direct flight with the new A380 plane. Lufthansa has 2 options for A380 flights: top deck only for business class or top deck a mixture of business and economy class. For the flight to Frankfurt, the business class was beyond full, they even wanted to incentivise people to downgrade to economy class. For the flight back to Singapore, I took the latter option and had a seat in the top deck.
The top deck is definitely more spacious, even if it is for the economy class. In both decks, I was assigned to the middle seat of the middle aisle. The lower deck was extremely small and uncomfortable. I was squirming in my seat the entire 13-hour flight. The top deck, however, was more spacious. If you are on the top deck, choose seat 96, where you have a lot more space for your leg.
Food and entertainment
When in Lufthansa, you have to drink beer. I had beer for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals were also not too bad. We had stewed beef or rice with chicken for lunch/dinner. And breakfast was complete with bread, cheese, sausages and egg. In general, the food was alright.
For snacks, they had very limited options. It was pretzel (with beer) or nuts. There were a lot fewer snacks to munch on, as compared to Singapore Airlines and Qatar. Nonetheless, it was alright. Bonus: they serve sparkling water without you having to specially request for it.
The entertainment had shows of several languages and they had some of the top movies. However, it was still very limited in movie selections. There is an interesting feature though – you can “favourite” your movies, documentaries or songs into a playlist! Perfect for sleeping through your flight. They even have a sleeping playlist for you!
Review of Lufthansa Airlines
All in all, Lufthansa Airlines is a great airline. They have really lovely staff who are extremely helpful and continues to smile despite the interesting requests made by people (aka the woman in front). However, the food and entertainment is not something I look forward to. If I were to take this airline again, I would simply sleep through the flight and not bother with the food and/or entertainment set.
