Continuing from A-Z of Travel Essentials, here’s Part II! As a frequent traveller, we both know that there are lots of things to consider. Here are the N-Z list. Use them for each destination and have a blast!
Night entertainment is fun in many places. So, many use in your packing, you include one party clothes. A simple dress is good for girls, and for guys, smart casual is good enough. In some places like Phuket, you don’t even have a dress code!

Openness to people, culture & food
Other than the just do it attitude, it’s important to keep your mind open. Open to the people, culture and the types of food. For example, the Italians are very passionate people. Just look at how animated they are when they speak and you will know. The Greeks and Chinese are curious people who will stop and stare at more “exotic” travellers. The cultures of countries also differ, so be willing to understand it. Food, especially, is something that I really love. I do my best to find the best local cuisines to expand my palate.
This is probably the main thing I cannot trevel without, especially in rainy season. A light, compact, warm, waterproof parka is really something I have in my bag at all times. An umbrella is bulky and may not fit into your tiny bag. A durable and light parka should be able to be folded into a tiny bag, yet warm enough so you can use them on plane rides and when it gets late at night. It should also be waterproof to keep you dry during the rainy days.
Quick fix (lotion, cream)
Ebook or physical book, reading material is great for long distances like on the train or plane and you would like to be alone. It is also great to get those long list of “Books to Read” shortened. I brought 3 books with me on my 2-weeks trip to Chiang-rai, Thailand the other time.
Amazon kindle is great for reading! (Plus, so many free books too)
If you don’t have a parka or light jacket, at least bring a large shawl. They double up as a dress in summer, beach towel on the beach and neck warmer in winter. It’s also a great blanket for those low-cost flights.
There is a travel pack that I have with me. Inside includes:
- US$ 100 (optional, depending on destination)
- Identity card + student card (if any)
- Soundproof headphones
- Eye mask
- Some candies and chocolates
- Soap in TSA-approved bottles
It is my mandatory toiletries bag with some other items that I need for travel. They are always ready for me to grab it and throw it in my travel bag. I will always have my essentials and it is always travel ready.
UV protection: lip balm, cream
Summer or Winter, you still need this. I add them to my travel pack (above) or have one in my bag all the time. I use coconut oil or Vasaline jelly. Both cheap and easy to find!
Makeup kit is something important. A light and simple make up is good enough. It depends on what you love, for me, I am ready to go with some brows, eye-liner and lipstick. I know other people have a bunch of makeup, it depends on how good you makes you feel!
- These Kiko eyebrow pencil lasts me about 6 months
- I bought my eye-liner at a random shop in Hong Kong. It’s been literally 5 years and still going.
- 3CE lipstick lasts me for 5 years now…… I don’t know if that’s okay. But I apply them on top of my lip balm, and it works.
Walking Shoes (Good Ones!)
Initially, I was thinking how important a good pair of shoes is. Then I realized it is impossible to do anything I have done during my trevels without a good pair of shoes! I have 2 pairs of shoes that I am always trevelling with: my Nike Flyknit and Geox shoes.
- My Nike Flyknit is basically my most trustworthy shoes. It is great for sports, hiking and long walks. They also pairs well with denim shorts and lots of casual clothes cause they also look like sneakers. I simply love how light they are, so it is light to pack and walk around in. I have used mine for 3 years now, and been to 20 countries with them. It’s definitely worthy of an investment.
- My Geox shoes are more for walking in the city. They are really comfortable, and I can walk in them for miles. I walked 60km in them in London and my feet were alright. They are also really fashionable to pair with casual clothes.
For Fancy Dates
Occasionally, I do bring my Salvatore Ferragamo Get Joy flats for more formal events. It also helps that they require very little space, so it is easy to trevel with them. They’re also really comfortable and made with extremely good quality. I have more than 5 pairs at home, so you know how much I love them. They’re definitely more expensive than my usual shoes, but they are made of quality leather and last ages.
Another good pair of shoes I have are winter hiking boots. My Timberland are the world’s best winter boots. They are so warm and perfect for any snowy mountain hikes. They also look great with my winter outfits. Be it hiking the Black Forest, exploring the cities of Switzerland in winter or even on the snow storm in New York, they are my to-go shoes for winter. They’re not the lightest shoes ever, but that’s all I need in winter. Just one pair of amazing boots!
Xternal Power Bank
External power bank is like the ultimate travel hack that every treveller will tell you. It is so easy, light and you are constantly connected. This is even more important when you have all your items in your phone and you need your phone to have battery.
The external power bank might be a tricky thing as some airports and airlines ban power banks for check in. There is also a limit to the power the power bank has. I recommend one that is enough for one charge and small that it passes through security clearance.
For sleeping, for comfy ride on the plane or for visiting some religious ruins and temples, a long pants is always useful. Otherwise, you can tie your scarf around your waist for ladies, when you enter the temples. I use yoga pants.

YOGA PANTS ARE THE BEST!
Zip lock bags
I have to thank the creator of Ziplock bags. Especially when I am going on rougher terrains like camping and forest trails, a ziplock is all I wish for. Keep your items in Ziplock and it keeps them waterproof. Not only so, a ziplock bag is also a vacuum bag. You can squeeze out all the air and it makes packing so much easier! Zip lock bags are everything. Always make sure you have some with you when you travel!
